Knowledge of the DNA sequence has become an important part of biological research but it is also of vital importance in other research disciplines including medicine, biotechnology, forensic, etc. Genomic research projects over the last few decades gave rise to several research areas in the study of genomes, like human genomics, bacteriophage genomics, metagenomics or pharmacogenomics.
Enzyme search using metagenomic approach
Certain microorganisms specialize in producing enzymes that degrade biological materials in natural environments, such as termite gut, cow rumen or compost piles. Discovering, harnessing, and enhancing the best biomass degrading enzymes have a significant impact on increasing the efficiency and reducing the cost of cellulosic biofuel production. The aim of the project was to find novel, more potent cellulase enzymes based on metagenomic sample sequencing, and to determine the rumen flora species. Data was processed with our in-house developed algorithms. Putative cellulases were selected for further analysis.
